OAS secretary general meets with head of UN mission in Haiti

The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, on Wednesday met with the special representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Sandra Honoré, with whom he discussed the main economic, political, and social issues of the Caribbean country, as well as the priorities of the work carried out by the Mission.

At the meeting, the two officials discussed the importance to continue supporting the government and people of Haiti in their efforts to establish a secure and stable environment for citizens and promoting investment; restructuring and strengthening the National Police; upholding the rule of law, and supporting disaster recovery and reconstruction initiatives in the country.

In this regard, the Head of the MINUSTAH reported that in the coming days, the United Nations secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, will present a progress report to be considered by the world body’s Assembly. The report will evaluate options for the eventual reconfiguration of the MINUSTAH and will include important conclusions on the work of the Mission, as well as the support provided to it by the countries of the region.

During the meeting, they also discussed the significant progress of efforts aimed at reducing violence and crime in Haiti, as well as the work of various international organizations and the national government to combat the cholera epidemic, and the relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Regarding the convocation of legislative and municipal elections to be held during the second semester of this year in Haiti, Insulza expressed the hope that the OAS will continue to provide support in the area of voter registration and the deployment of an electoral observation mission.

Upon concluding the meeting, the OAS secretary general and representative Honoré reiterated their commitment to continue working together and in coordination between the OAS and the MINUSTAH in order to ensure the success of support programs and operations in Haiti.
