Former Curacao finance minister arrested in connection with murder of political leader

Former minister of finance George Jamaloodin was arrested in Curacao on Thursday morning as a suspect in the investigation into the murder of the late political leader and former member of parliament Helmin Wiels.

His house was searched and some items were seized.

According to the Dutch news website NOS.nl, Jamaloodin may be one of the intellectual authors of the Wiels’ murder.

“What is Jamaloodin exactly suspected of, the prosecution will not say. Possibly he is one of the principal authors of the murder,” the NOS.nl stated on its website.

Wiels was shot dead on May 5, 2013 on a beach in Curacao. He was the leader of the largest party in Curacao, Pueblo Soberano. Jamaloodin is a member of the Movimentu Futuro Korsou (MFK) party of former prime minister Gerrit Schotte and was minister from 2010 to 2012. Today he runs a security company.

Confession

Several people have been arrested during the course of the investigation. Two weeks ago a man was arrested who apparently extorted one of the intellectual authors of the murder. In April, a suspect confessed that he pulled the trigger. He said that he was paid to be the hit man.

Before he died, Wiels announced that he was on the track of a ‘big fraud case’. The late political leader even stated that he had information about illegal SMS lotteries, which would incriminate lottery boss Robie dos Santos, who is Jamaloodin’s brother. Dos Santos also funded the MFK.
