Guyana Festival opens today

The wait is over, the stage is set, booths are prepped, the final rehearsals are done… Guyana Festival 2014, here we come!
The cultural extravaganza begins today at the National Stadium, as Guyana Festival Day one kicks off with a hair-raising parachute show by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at 16:30h.

The Tourism Ministry is urging the public to “come and see our brave soldiers as they drop from hundreds of feet in the air, expertly manoeuvring to land in the centre of the stadium field”.
Following this fantastic show, the National Concert will commence at 17:00h and this will showcase a spectacular depiction of Guyanese music, dance and drama, representative of the fusion of our six cultures.

The National Concert, to be held under the theme “Myths and Legends… Sweet, Sweet Guyana” is just one element of an action-packed weekend planned for August 8, 9 and 10; a host of other events and attractions will be taking place at the stadium, including live music, kids zone complete with Coney Island and daily displays of art and craft.

“Other highlights of the three-day festivities include a National Cook out, a Celebrity Tent – come and meet outstanding Guyanese personalities, Demonstration Tent – come and lend your hand at local talents, and a Storytelling Tent – come and listen to old folklore such as Old Higue, Jumbie, Massacura Man, Moon Gazer.

“Take a stroll down memory lane, back to “boyhood days” as you revel in the scents, tastes and sights sure to tug at the nostalgic strings in your hearts.

“Never before has there been such a grand event that depicts all aspects of Guyanese culture and celebrating all generations of Guyanese artistes and men and women who have made Guyana proud. The Guyana National Stadium at Providence is the place to be this weekend!” the release said.

Sponsors for this unique event include, Courts, GT&T, Digicel, Caricom Bottling Inc, China Trading, Mohamed Enterprise, New Thriving, Bai Shan Ling, the NEW GPC, Jiffi Lubes, Sterling, Golden Brook, BK, Windsor Estate, Bank of Guyana, GWI, Dynamic Airline, Fly Jamaica Airways, TravelSpan, Star Party Rental, Impressions, Kings Jewellery World, ANSA McAL, Bassoo Construction Limited and Princess Hotel, among many others.
