Comienza en Trinidad y Tobago la primera cumbre entre Caricom y Japón
Caricom y Japón quieren avanzar en cooperación durante su primera cumbre
Jefes de Gobierno de los países de la Comunidad del Caribe (Caricom) se reunirán este lunes en Trinidad y Tobago con el primer ministro japonés, Shinzo Abe, en la primera cumbre en la historia entre el Estado asiático y el grupo regional que tiene como objetivo principal avanzar en cooperación.
El encuentro es la segunda escala de una gira por América Latina para promover la cooperación con el área que el jefe del Ejecutivo japonés inició en México y que lo llevará también a Colombia, Chile y Brasil.
La secretaria de Caricom informó de que la relación entre los países del grupo y Japón se remontan a 1993 y que la cumbre supondrá un salto cualitativo en el refuerzo para mejorar las relaciones bilaterales.
Los países de Caricom quieren aprovechar la primera visita de un primer ministro japonés a la región para alcanzar acuerdos en campos como la cultura, comercio y turismo.
Los miembros de la organización regional quieren que la cumbre sirva para avanzar en el ámbito de la cooperación internacional, un campo que tiene para la región una cita importante el próximo septiembre en Samoa dentro del ámbito de los países SIDS (acrónimo en inglés para referirse a los 52 pequeños Estados insulares en desarrollo que hay en el mundo).
La Cumbre se celebra semanas después de la última reunión anual de jefes de Gobierno del Caricom que aprobó un plan estratégico para los próximos cinco años (2015-2019) que incluye profundizar en la política exterior conjunta de los países de la región.
La apertura oficial de la cumbre estará a cargo del secretario general de Caricom, Irwin La Rocque; la primera ministra de Trinidad y Tobago y anfitriona, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, y el presidente de la organización, Gaston Browne.
Caricom está formado por Antigua y Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belice, Dominica, Granada, Guyana, Haití, Jamaica, Montserrat, San Cristóbal y Nieves, Santa Lucía, San Vicente y las Granadinas, Surinam y Trinidad y Tobago, además de contar con acuerdos con otros países de la zona.
Caricom leaders to seek opportunities in partnership at summit
Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves says Caricom leaders will seek opportunities for “partnership in development” when the first-ever Caricom-Japan Summit is held in Port of Spain today.
Gonsalves, however, said the 15-member bloc is aware Japan is lobbying for its support as the Asian heavyweight seeks to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
“They are canvassing for it, but they are not the only people who canvass to get a seat as non-permanent members of the Security Council.
“The fact that he has to leave from Japan to come to the Caribbean is indicative of the importance of the countries in the region on a number of matters,” Gonsalves told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) on Saturday.
In an indication that Japan holds a favourable status within the region in its quest for that UN seat, Gonsalves, the current Caricom chairman, said: “Japan is a very strong candidate… and they have had a history of working in the Caribbean, particularly in the area of education and fisheries.
“I will like to see that broadened, but they are a very responsible country,” he said, noting that of the developed countries, Japan has the second largest economy after the United States.
Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will meet Caricom leaders this morning, then hold bilateral talks with each head of government. A number of agreements are also to be signed.
“We are hoping that we can put together, individual countries and Caricom as a whole, a programme for partnership in development, which will involve resources and also for us to collaborate together… to fight for peace and justice globally,” Gonsalves said.
This year marks 20 years of relations between Caricom and Japan.
