President Granger and Cuban president hold talks on Guyana/Cuba relations

Talks about the relations between Guyana and Cuba and the United States and Cuba were the focus of a meeting held on Saturday between President David Granger and his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez.

“President Diaz Canel pointed out that the economic and financial blockade against Cuba was tightening but that Cuba was making every effort to pursue its economic and social objectives in the interest of the Cuban people,” said the Guyana Embassy in Cuba, in a statement.

It added that the presidents agreed that Caricom-Cuba cooperation is vital to the development of the Caribbean region.

Both sides also agreed that they will have to continue to search for ways and means aimed at deepening collaboration on all fronts.

Granger also used the meeting to update the Cuban leader on the current political situation in Guyana and clarified to him the circumstances that could lead to early elections this year.

The president thanked his Cuban counterpart for the continued care he has been obtaining in Cuba, where he is undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Granger has now completed the fourth round of his treatment and his doctors have indicated that his progress and response are satisfactory and in conformity with what they expected.

The president returned to Guyana late Saturday.
