Desde NODAL – Noticias de América Latina y el Caribe – informamos que, a quince días de la detención arbitraria de Lucas Aguilera y Paula Giménez en el este de Libia, crece la preocupación por la situación de las y los voluntarios que integraban el Convoy Global Sumud Magreb de ayuda humanitaria con destino a Gaza. El pasado 4 de junio, tras once días sin información oficial, lograron establecer comunicación con sus familias, al igual que el resto de las personas detenidas. Desde entonces, no se han registrado avances que garanticen su liberación ni el acceso de organismos humanitarios independientes.
Entre las personas detenidas se encuentran también Matías Álvarez Rodríguez (Uruguay), Alicia Armesto Núñez (España), Domenico Centrone (Italia), Leonarda Alberizia (Italia), Ana Margarida França Santana Baptista (Portugal), Lauro Kwoczala (Polonia), Ashraf Khoja (Túnez) y Jenelle Jones (Estados Unidos). La presencia de ciudadanos de América Latina, Europa, África y Estados Unidos convierte este caso en una preocupación humanitaria internacional que involucra a múltiples nacionalidades y requiere una respuesta urgente de los organismos competentes.
Según relataron a sus familiares, permanecen aislados e incomunicados, sin contacto entre los propios detenidos. Asimismo, informaron que sostienen una huelga de hambre desde hace varios días como medida de protesta frente a su situación de privación arbitraria de libertad, aislamiento e incertidumbre. Algunos de ellos mantienen además una huelga seca, sin ingerir alimentos ni líquidos, lo que agrava de manera acelerada el riesgo para su salud, integridad física y vida.
De acuerdo con la información transmitida a sus familias, varios de los detenidos han sufrido desmayos, deterioro físico, pérdida de peso y debilidad extrema como consecuencia de la huelga de hambre. También denunciaron condiciones de aislamiento prolongado, incomunicación, incertidumbre permanente sobre su situación, presiones psicológicas, interrogatorios intensivos, hostigamiento y otras prácticas incompatibles con los estándares internacionales de derechos humanos.
También manifestaron no contar con acceso pleno a asistencia jurídica ni con información suficiente sobre su situación procesal. A ello se suman condiciones incompatibles con estándares mínimos de trato humanitario, incluyendo la ausencia de condiciones adecuadas de higiene personal.
Según el testimonio difundido del voluntario Matías Álvarez de Uruguay, las y los voluntarios permanecen detenidos arbitrariamente en un complejo penitenciario aislado para civiles, administrado por el Ministerio del Interior y señalado localmente como un “black site” o centro de detención clandestino. La falta de supervisión independiente, de garantías mínimas y de acceso humanitario agrava la preocupación por su integridad física y psicológica.

Resulta especialmente alarmante que, pese al deterioro físico reportado, los episodios de desmayo y la huelga seca en curso, las autoridades no hayan permitido el ingreso de equipos médicos independientes ni visitas humanitarias internacionales. Según la misma información, son los propios médicos voluntarios del convoy quienes intentan asistir y monitorear a sus compañeros detenidos, aun encontrándose ellos mismos en condiciones de agotamiento físico y psicológico.
Las circunstancias en las que finalmente pudieron comunicarse con sus familiares permiten presumir que dicho contacto fue consecuencia de la presión ejercida por los propios voluntarios a través de la huelga de hambre que sostienen desde hace varios días, y no el resultado de mecanismos regulares de protección, supervisión o acceso humanitario.
Si bien este contacto constituye una noticia relevante para sus familias y para quienes seguimos acompañando el caso, la información recibida confirma la existencia de una situación de extrema gravedad humanitaria y sanitaria. También genera profunda preocupación la persistencia de condiciones de aislamiento, incomunicación, presión psicológica, interrogatorios intensivos y manipulación de la información sobre su situación judicial, que afectan gravemente la integridad emocional y mental de las personas detenidas.
De acuerdo con Global Sumud, las personas detenidas habrían sido informadas de una eventual comparecencia judicial, en un contexto atravesado por comunicaciones contradictorias, promesas reiteradas de liberación incumplidas y ausencia de información clara sobre su situación procesal. Estos elementos refuerzan la necesidad de acceso inmediato a asistencia legal independiente, observación internacional y verificación humanitaria urgente.
Por ello, exigimos con carácter urgente una visita humanitaria internacional inmediata e independiente que permita verificar sus condiciones de detención, constatar su estado de salud y garantizar su integridad física y psicológica. Del mismo modo, exigimos asistencia médica urgente y especializada para todas las y los voluntarios, particularmente frente a las consecuencias derivadas de la huelga de hambre y de la huelga seca en curso.
Lucas Aguilera y Paula Giménez viajaron el pasado 24 de mayo para participar del Convoy Global Sumud Magreb, una iniciativa civil internacional destinada a acompañar el ingreso de ayuda humanitaria al pueblo palestino. Tras haber participado en instancias de negociación destinadas a garantizar el paso seguro de la asistencia humanitaria, ambos integraron el equipo encargado de dichas gestiones.
No existe ninguna razón que justifique la prolongación de la privación de libertad de quienes participaban de una misión civil y humanitaria internacional. La asistencia humanitaria no constituye delito y su criminalización resulta incompatible con los principios fundamentales del derecho internacional humanitario.
La información conocida en las últimas horas confirma que ya no nos encontramos únicamente ante una situación de privación de libertad e incomunicación, sino frente a una emergencia humanitaria que requiere la intervención inmediata de organismos internacionales capaces de verificar las condiciones de detención y prevenir consecuencias irreparables para la salud y la integridad física de las personas privadas de su libertad arbitrariamente.
Frente a esta situación, exigimos con carácter urgente:
• una visita humanitaria inmediata;
• asistencia médica urgente y especializada para las y los voluntarios detenidos;
• ingreso de equipos médicos independientes;
• información oficial, pública y verificable sobre su estado de salud y situación jurídica;
• acceso pleno a asistencia legal;
• garantías efectivas para su integridad física y psicológica;
• el cese de las condiciones de aislamiento, incomunicación, hostigamiento e interrogatorios intensivos;
• acceso consular pleno para todas las nacionalidades involucradas;
• y la inmediata liberación de Lucas Aguilera, Paula Giménez, Matías Álvarez Rodríguez, Alicia Armesto Núñez, Domenico Centrone, Leonarda Alberizia, Ana Margarida França Santana Baptista, Lauro Kwoczala, Ashraf Khoja, Jenelle Jones y del conjunto de las y los voluntarios detenidos.
Asimismo, exigimos al Estado argentino, a las cancillerías de los países involucrados, a Naciones Unidas, al Comité Internacional de la Cruz Roja y a todos los organismos competentes que intervengan de manera inmediata y activa para garantizar la protección de las personas detenidas y prevenir consecuencias irreparables para su salud e integridad.
La protección de ciudadanos argentinos detenidos en el exterior constituye una obligación indelegable del Estado argentino y requiere una respuesta acorde a la gravedad de los hechos conocidos hasta el momento.
Finalmente, reiteramos nuestro reclamo para que se garantice el ingreso de ayuda humanitaria al pueblo palestino por todas las vías posibles y conforme al derecho internacional humanitario. La asistencia médica, alimentaria y humanitaria destinada a poblaciones civiles no puede ser criminalizada ni obstaculizada.
Seguiremos informando públicamente cada novedad confirmada y realizando, junto a sus familias, todas las acciones necesarias hasta lograr que Paula Giménez, Lucas Aguilera y el conjunto de los voluntarios recuperen su libertad y regresen a sus hogares.
URGENT | Fifteen days without humanitarian access or medical assistance: volunteers from the humanitarian mission carrying aid to Gaza remain isolated and on hunger strike
NODAL – Latin American and Caribbean News – reports that, after fourteen days without any official information regarding the situation of Lucas Aguilera and Paula Giménez, Argentine citizens arbitrarily detained in eastern Libya while participating in the Global Sumud Maghreb humanitarian aid convoy bound for Gaza, both were finally able to establish direct communication with their families from that region. Other detainees were also able to contact their families.
The list of detainees also includes representatives from several countries: Matías Álvarez Rodríguez (Uruguay), Alicia Armesto Núñez (Spain), Domenico Centrone (Italy), Leonarda Alberizia (Italy), Ana Margarida França Santana Baptista (Portugal), Lauro Kwoczala (Poland), Ashraf Khoja (Tunisia), and Jenelle Jones (United States). The presence of citizens from Latin America, Europe, Africa, and the United States makes this an international humanitarian concern involving multiple nationalities and requiring an urgent response from the relevant authorities and international organizations.
According to the information conveyed to their families, the detainees remain isolated and continue to be held under incommunicado conditions, with no contact among themselves. They also reported that they have been on hunger strike for several days as a form of protest against their arbitrary deprivation of liberty, isolation, and uncertainty. Some are also on a dry hunger strike, refusing both food and water, which rapidly increases the risk to their health, physical integrity, and lives.
Several detainees have reportedly suffered fainting episodes, physical deterioration, weight loss, and extreme weakness as a consequence of the hunger strike. They also described prolonged isolation, incommunicado detention, constant uncertainty regarding their situation, psychological pressure, intensive interrogations, harassment, and other practices incompatible with international human rights standards.
They further stated that they do not have full access to legal assistance and have not received sufficient information regarding their legal status. These circumstances are aggravated by conditions incompatible with minimum standards of humane treatment, including the lack of adequate personal hygiene.
According to testimony released by Uruguayan volunteer Matías Álvarez, the volunteers remain arbitrarily detained in an isolated civilian detention complex administered by the Ministry of the Interior and locally described as a “black site” or clandestine detention center. The lack of independent oversight, minimum guarantees, and humanitarian access further increases concerns over their physical and psychological integrity.
It is particularly alarming that, despite reports of physical deterioration, fainting episodes, and an ongoing dry hunger strike, the authorities have not allowed access by independent medical teams or international humanitarian organizations. According to the same information, the convoy’s own volunteer doctors are attempting to assist and monitor their detained colleagues, despite being in a state of physical and psychological exhaustion themselves.
The circumstances under which the detainees were finally able to communicate with their families suggest that this contact resulted from pressure exerted by the volunteers through the hunger strike they have maintained for several days, rather than from regular protection mechanisms, oversight procedures, or humanitarian access.
While this contact constitutes important news for their families and for all those following the case, the information received confirms the existence of an extremely serious humanitarian and health emergency. It is also deeply concerning that conditions of isolation, incommunicado detention, psychological pressure, intensive interrogations, and manipulation of information regarding their legal status persist, severely affecting the emotional and mental integrity of the detainees.
According to Global Sumud, the detainees have reportedly been informed of a possible court appearance, in a context marked by contradictory communications, repeated unfulfilled promises of release, and the absence of clear information regarding their legal status. These elements reinforce the need for immediate access to independent legal assistance, international observation, and urgent humanitarian verification.
For this reason, we urgently demand an immediate and independent international humanitarian visit to verify their conditions of detention, assess their health status, and guarantee their physical and psychological integrity. We also demand urgent and specialized medical assistance for all volunteers, particularly in light of the consequences of the ongoing hunger strike and dry hunger strike.
Lucas Aguilera and Paula Giménez traveled on May 24 to participate in the Global Sumud Maghreb Convoy, an international civil initiative aimed at accompanying the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. After participating in negotiations intended to guarantee the safe passage of humanitarian assistance, both joined the team responsible for those efforts.
There is no justification whatsoever for the continued deprivation of liberty of individuals participating in an international civil and humanitarian mission. Humanitarian assistance is not a crime, and its criminalization is incompatible with the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.
The information that has emerged in recent hours confirms that this is no longer solely a situation of deprivation of liberty and incommunicado detention. It is a humanitarian emergency requiring the immediate intervention of international organizations capable of verifying detention conditions and preventing irreparable consequences for the health and physical integrity of those arbitrarily deprived of their liberty.
In light of this situation, we urgently demand:
• an immediate humanitarian visit;
• urgent and specialized medical assistance for the detained volunteers;
• access by independent medical teams;
• official, public, and verifiable information regarding their health status and legal situation;
• full access to legal assistance;
• effective guarantees for their physical and psychological integrity;
• an end to conditions of isolation, incommunicado detention, harassment, and intensive interrogations;
• full consular access for all nationalities involved;
• the immediate release of Lucas Aguilera, Paula Giménez, Matías Álvarez Rodríguez, Alicia Armesto Núñez, Domenico Centrone, Leonarda Alberizia, Ana Margarida França Santana Baptista, Lauro Kwoczala, Ashraf Khoja, Jenelle Jones, and all detained volunteers.
We also call upon the Argentine State, the foreign ministries of the countries involved, the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and all competent bodies to intervene immediately and actively in order to ensure the protection of the detainees and prevent irreparable harm to their health and integrity.
The protection of Argentine citizens detained abroad constitutes a non-delegable duty of the Argentine State and requires a response commensurate with the gravity of the facts known to date.
Finally, we reiterate our demand that humanitarian aid be allowed to reach the Palestinian people through all possible channels and in accordance with international humanitarian law. Medical, food, and humanitarian assistance intended for civilian populations must not be criminalized or obstructed.
We will continue to publicly report every confirmed development and, together with the families, carry out all necessary actions until Paula Giménez, Lucas Aguilera, and all detained volunteers regain their freedom and return home.
