Caribbean countries to participate in salt reduction project

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is launching a special project aimed at building capacity for dietary salt reduction in the Caribbean.

WHO said the project, which begins on June 1, is a joint effort of American Heart Association, Healthy Caribbean Coalition, WHO Collaborative centre for social marketing at University of South Florida and Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

The project will be applied through civil society coalitions in five countries — the Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, St Vincent and Grenadines and Antigua and is aimed at preparing countries for their work in changing a social norm around salt/sodium consumption.

Meanwhile, a survey that will compare and contrast salt content of children’s meals both within and between countries for different restaurant chains, to understand the market in order to negotiate with manufacturers to reduce salt, will be undertaken soon.

The organisers said that in line with previous ‘International Food Products’ survey product protocol, they have collected product data on children’s meal for children aged 4-6 years served in over 30 different countries from international restaurants and fast food establishments such as Burger King, KFC, MacDonald’s and Subway.
