Let’s celebrate our diversity

“Today is a day for all our people whatever their race, background or location.” This from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday, on the eve of Trinidad and Tobago’s 53rd anniversary of Independence and just days away from the next general election.

While political parties, including the United National Congress (UNC), of which she is the leader, took to the nation’s corners to rally supporters ahead of next Monday’s polls, Persad-Bissessar in a statement yesterday encouraged citizens to celebrate diversity.
“We are a model to the world as a diverse nation of people of many origins who have been able to forge an enduring unity,” Persad-Bissessar said in a brief address issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.

“We are richer for our diversity and differences and we are stronger as a nation because of the harmony which exists.”
Persad-Bissessar said all the people of Trinidad and Tobago, whether at home or abroad, can be “very proud of our achievements, development and influence as an independent nation”.

“The responsibility is on us all to remain true to the founding principles of our nation. The challenge to us is to ensure an even better future for our children,” she said.

“We can be very proud of the performance of our economy, our education system, our health care, our infrastructure and our provision of homes. We can also be proud of our achievements in sports, through cricket, football, boxing, and athletics. But let us make the most of what we have and move forward to a better tomorrow.”

Persad-Bissessar said the country must work to continue the progress made since Independence and to secure an even better future for Trinidad and Tobago.

On behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), it gives me great pleasure to offer sincere congratulations to the Government and People of Trinidad and Tobago, on the occasion of your Fifty-Third Anniversary as an independent nation.

As the citizens reflect on this occasion, it must be with pride as they savour the achievements of their country since nationhood. These great strides have been made possible, in large measure, through the natural and human resources with which Trinidad and Tobago has been blessed. The dynamism and creativity of the people have been major factors in the country’s progress.

One of the most significant aspects of an independent Trinidad and Tobago has been its unyielding commitment to regional integration. As a founding member of our Community, Trinidad and Tobago has taken its leadership responsibility seriously and has been a standard bearer for CARICOM.

As Trinidad and Tobago continues on its development path, the country can be assured that the Caribbean Community will be rendering its full support in the knowledge that its greater development can only redound to the benefit of the entire community.
