Prime Minister Gonsalves to meet with Pope Francis
rime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is leading a delegation to the Vatican where he will meet with Pope Francis, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister.
It said Gonsalves, who left on Monday, will meet with the Pope on Thursday and would return to the country on December 28.
His delegation includes his wife Eloise Gonsalves, and their children, Isis, Soleil and Storm as well as Wafic Said, non-resident ambassador to the Holy See and the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, I. Rhonda King.
The Office of the Prime Minister said that the Prime Minister is meeting the travel expenses of his three children.
In 2008, a local radio station and radio personality were ordered to pay Prime Minister Gonsalves US$160,000 in damages and cost for defaming his character, after the talk show host, Elwardo Lynch made statements concerning Gonsalves’ 2002 visit to Rome to meet the late Pope John Paul II.
Lynch had claimed that the prime minister, who was accompanied by his wife, mother and daughter, had used government funds to pay for the trip. However Gonsalves flatly denied those charges.
