PM says ruling party confident and ready

Prime Minister Doctor Kenny Anthony has declared that his ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) is confident and ready as the June 6, 2016 general elections approach.

He said the SLP is not only ready, but r-e-d-d-y as well – an obvious reference to the ruling party’s official colour.

“The machinery is in place, we know we can and we will and we will not be I intimidated. We will conduct ourselves peacefully but what ultimately matters is the ballot box,” Anthony said on HTS Television this evening.

He declared that the SLP is on course.

The Prime Minister, who has been the representative for Vieux Fort South, spoke after filing his nomination papers.

Speaking of his own chances of regaining the Vieux Fort seat in what is considered to be a no contest with Doctor Ulric Mondesir of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP), Anthony said he believed the people will express their confidence in him.

“We have had a wonderful relationship,” he asserted.

Anthony said he and his team are well organized and prepared to go.

At the same time he explained that he takes all of his opponents seriously, no matter who they are.

Questioned on the matter of term limits for Prime Ministers, Anthony noted that it was an old issue.

He recalled having said in the past that the democratic process must not be frustrated.

“It is not for individuals to decide how many terms we should have,” the PM told HTS Television.

He observed that if the people want an individual to continue as Prime Minister, they have a choice on election day.

Anthony said:

“So we must observe our own democratic principles and not try to frustrate it – yield to what the people wish.”
